The Chiringuito Espigón is at the entance of Garrucha coming from Mojácar Playa. It’s the green and white one at the end of the playa just before the Paseo Marítimo and is a typical chiringuito both from the outside and the inside. There are no menus and everything on offer is written on a blackboard next to the bar area. It is quite a large restaurant and just recently, they have add and extra eating area. Bear in mind that they only serve fish, sometimes they have prawns and to accompany your meal the only choice is tomato salad. When we arrived at about 20.30 we were the only ones there apart from one other couple but we expected this to be the case as it is a very Spanish place and as you know, Spaniards tend to eat fairly late.
Our waiter came and took our order for a tinto de verano and a sin alchohol San Miguel while we studied the blackboard. Prices vary a great deal, from about €9 up to €45 for a Rodaballo (but it did weigh 1.5 kg) and if you are feeling really extravagant, Garrucha prawns can be had for €90 a kg.or if not so extravagant, €45 for 500gr. It isn’t the type of restaurant where you order a whole three course meal in one go, you order your fish and order more if you feel that have room for more.
After studying the menu we decided to share a portion of sardines at €9 and a tomato salad at €5, all washed down with a bottle of white wine at €12. Our waiter came with a basket of bread priced at €1 and our tomato salad and within 5 minutes our sardines arrived. This was a huge plate with twelve sardines which were delicious and very fresh and for €9 very good value.
Things got a bit more difficult with the next course as there were lots of fish which we were not familiar with, however, when we asked our nice waiter what they were he brought over a coloured chart with pictures and names of all the fish in Spanish and in English. We eventually made our choices, my partner chose the Salmonetes (Red Mullet) priced at €20 and I decided on the Lenguado (Sole). Just as before, they arrived within minutes of ordering.
I must say, I was disappointed with my Lenguado, for €20 I had expected one reasonable sized fish but instead got two small ones. The Salmonetes were just about ok but probably could have done with another two or three minutes on the grill. The outsides were ok but some of the bigger ones were not quite cooked in the middle.
This is definitely a no frills eating place with just plain fish, no garnish, no vegetables and no coffee served after your meal. I don’t have a problem with this if it is reflected in the price but I felt that this was not the case. The portions were large as was the bill when it arrived (€69), but to be fair, the portions were large enough to have fed three as we couldn’t finish it all. As I said previously the service was extremely quick and we were in and out in less than an hour. I personally for €69 would have preferred a much slower pace but this is a place where their aim is to get people in and out as quickly as possible as they get very, very busy, especially for lunch time. It is very popular with Spanish families and by the time we left at 21.20 it was already half full. The sardines were very good and it may be worth a visit for a lunchtime snack.
