In amongst the tourist shops, restaurants and bars of Roquetas de Mar is a very special little restaurant called Gilberts. It’s situated on the Avenida de las Gaviotas and is opposite the Hotel Playa Luna, making it quite easy to find. It is a small restaurant and the first thing that struck us when we went in, was the lighting, very soft and gentle which is so unusual for Spain. We were given such a warm welcome by our host and staff it was like meeting old friends. We were firstly offered the choice of a drink at the bar or at our table and we chose to have it at the table while we browsed through the menu. Although Gilberts has only been open a short while, it was obvious from the number of other people there that it is extremely popular and has many regular customers. By 9 o’clock the whole place was full. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated, and at last we have found a place with comfortable chairs! The menu is fairly small but big enough to satisfy most people. Starters included fresh soup of the day, prawn cocktail, scampi in an Italian sauce, cheese croquettes and many others. I decided to go for the scampi at €8 and my companion chose the shrimp croquettes at €9. Main courses consist of fillet steak with a choice of sauce, pork fillet with bacon and cheese sauce, chicken, lamb shank with mint gravy, and there is a fish of the day which on this particular day was salmon in bearnaise sauce. My companion decided on the fillet steak with a sauce at €18 and I ordered the lamb shank with mint gravy at €16. We both thought a bottle of red wine would be nice and ordered a bottle of the house red.
The wine arrived with some lovely fresh warm bread and I must say, it was one of the nicest house wines that I have had and very reasonably priced at €9 a bottle. Our starters arrived and were delicious and beautifully presented. After just the right amount of time our main courses was served and was equally delicious as our starter. They came with a dish of freshly cooked vegetables and lovely roast potatoes. The whole meal was faultless. Although we were completely full we couldn’t resist the Belgian chocolate cake with ice cream when the desserts of the day were read out to us, but so as not to be too greedy we decided to share one, it was as light as a feather and heavenly. We finished the meal with a coffee and a liquer and were kindly offered another on the house, which sadly we had to decline because we were both so full. The bill arrived and was €67 for what was an exceptional meal. The only way you can see how special this place is, is to book a table and see it for yourself. Everything about it is perfect, the food, the ambience and most of all the staff who made us so welcome.
