Los Pastores Cabrera Restaurant Review

Cortijo Cabrera  Sierra Cabrera
Turre
Tel 950 468 002

Restaurant Los Pastores can be found in the hills of the Sierra Cabrera, it’s a bit of a trek from the main Turre Road but Cabrera is well signposted and well worth the drive. The views when you arrive are quite spectacular so if you go during the day remember to take your camera with you.
The restaurant has been there for many years but at the end of last summer it changed hands and the kitchen is now headed by Chris Waters, a very experienced chef of many years. You enter the restaurant through an archway and into a lovely courtyard where in the summer you can dine, or when the weather improves a bit sit outside under the patio heaters and have a drink or two. The restaurant inside is quite small but there is also a conservatory where you can have your meal if you wish. My partner and I went on a Saturday evening and sat in the bar with the wood burner and had a drink while we looked through the large and varied menu. There is a very good selection of starters and main courses not to mention the pizzas and pastas. Apart from the normal menu there is also a selection of specials which changes frequently and have a good choice of starters and main courses. The problem was knowing what to choose, it all sounded delicious. For a starter I eventually decided on the Thai mussels which were priced at €12 and my partner chose the goats cheese and spinach parcels priced at €10. For the main course the king prawns in a brandy sauce sounded too good to miss and my partner decided to have the fillet steak with a mountain herb sauce. The wine list is fairly extensive and we decided between us to have a bottle of red Baron De Ley which is one of our favorites. The king prawns were priced at €16 and the fillet steak at €18. When the starter arrived we were not disappointed, the Thai mussels were one of the nicest starters that I have ever had, very spicy but not so as to be too hot. Likewise the goat’s cheese and spinach parcels were just as nice. The service was very good, with just the right amount of time between courses, none of this rushing up with the main course as soon as the starter is cleared away. The king prawns in brandy were all that I had hoped they would be, and nicely presented. My partner’s fillet steak was a very good size and cooked just as it was asked for. The main course came with a dish of fried potatoes and a dish of mixed vegetables and red cabbage. The whole meal was excellent and our only criticism was that my main course (King prawns) would have been nice if it had come with a small amount of rice and a choice of vegetables. But maybe that is just a personal thing as neither of us like red cabbage and are not too keen on mixed vegetables. When it came to desert time we were both very full but after seeing the menu decided that we couldn’t resist the white chocolate and macadamia nut cheesecake, however we felt a lot less guilty when we decided to share one, but this really defeated the object when we decided to have a portion of vanilla ice cream with it. We both felt that we had had a very enjoyable evening with excellent food in lovely surroundings. We will definitely be going back soon and can’t wait for the summer to go back so that we can eat in the lovely courtyard. The total bill was €86 and we both had an excellent meal.
