Once again back in Mojácar, this month we visited the Restaurant Bar Mesa in the Parque Comercial on Mojácar Playa. We had happily dined here before it was taken over by the new owners Christine and Derek and were pleasantly surprised by the new menu and service. The restaurant is on the first floor of the commercial center with fantastic views across the sea. For the warmer months the terrace is the place to be for a drink or al fresco dining whilst enjoying the views.
When we arrived we were immediately welcomed. We sat at the bar and had a drink while we looked through the menu and were then shortly shown to our table.
For starters, amongst other things, you have a choice of Smoked Salmon stuffed with Cream Cheese, Deep Fried White Bait and hand cut Potato Wedges with Chilli Salsa Dipping sauce. I decided to start with one of their weekly specials, deep fried Prawns Wrapped in Filo Pastry and served with sweet chilli sauce and priced at €5.50. My partner had the crispy potato skins which came with a mushroom and garlic sauce and was priced at €3.95. Both the starters were very nicely presented and the portions were generous but just right. I have to say that the prawns were a hit with both of us and it has been quite a while since I have had some this good. For our main course my partner chose the duck with orange and port sauce priced at €14.50. I had, after a long deliberation over lamb or beef, Char Grilled Fillet Steak (certified Argentinean) which you can have with a choice of four different sauces. The steak was priced at €20 and with a sauce you can add another €1.75. Other choices on the main courses are Spare Ribs, Gammon, Spicy Cajun Chicken and Pork Tenderloin in Mustard and Honey Sauce. There is also the specials that change weekly and the fresh fish of the day. The day that we were there, they had Salmon with a Mint and Orange sauce, barbecued Sea Bass and Mix Grilled Fish amongst other things. All main courses come with seasonal fresh vegetables and your choice of salad, rice or baked potato, chips, potato wedges or sauté potatoes. You also have to add mushrooms, peas and onion rings to this if you are having any of their barbequed meals.
The main courses arrived and if we were going to complain about something at this point, it would be for being served too much food. The duck was just right, crispy on the outside, pink on the inside and with a very delicious sauce. My steak was good but I would warn people about the meat being char grilled as not everybody enjoys this taste. To accompany our meal we had the house red wine priced at €8 for a bottle. Time for dessert arrived and as usual, when puddings are home made, we couldn’t resist and had a Bailey’s Cheesecake very reasonable priced at €3.95. Other choices were Lemon Syllabub, Chocolate Mousse and Banana Split.
From the moment we arrived we felt very welcome and all the staff are very friendly, smiley and efficient. As a newly opened restaurant we can only see this place improving and becoming a popular place with locals and visitors. At the moment they are only open in the evening but in April they will start their new time table opening from 11.00 till 15.00 for sandwiches and coffees. For evening meals booking is strongly recommended.
Our verdict, thumbs up.
