Take the road out of Albox to Taberno and when you reach Los Marcelinos you will find The Travellers Inn Hotel and Restaurant on the left hand side of the road. You can either drive down the very steep slope and park right outside or you can park in the lay-by just opposite. Go down the slope into the main door and you will find yourself in the bar which is a very busy bar and on most evenings is packed with people drinking or having bar snacks. As there were no available tables we decided to go straight downstairs into the restaurant. The restaurant is completely divided into two, a smoking section and a larger non smoking section so non smokers are unaware of the fact that people are smoking in the room next door.
We were shown to our table and ordered drinks while we studied the menu, which I would think, has something for all tastes. The menu is very large and we ordered drinks whilst we tried to decide what to have. Starters begin at €3.95 and include soup of the day, spring roll with chilli sauce €4.25, pate €4.95 and prawn cocktail €4.50. Eventually my friend and I chose the prawn cocktail, my partner decided on the spring roll with chilli sauce and my friend´s partner the pate. The items on the wine list are too numerous to mention but we chose a bottle of white priced at €18.40 and a bottle of red house wine at €9.75. The main course was equally difficult to choose because of the vast selection. Prices start at €7.50 and include Lamb Chops €9.95, Lomo with honey and mustard sauce €11.50 and surf and turf €17.99. There is a very good fish section which consists of Halibut, Swordfish, Salmon and a small section of the menu is suitable for vegetarians. For meat lovers there is a good choice of steaks amongst which are Rib Eye and Entrecote, and also a choice of chicken dishes. If you turn to the last page on the menu you will find the list of specials which include steak and mushroom pie, lasagne and a curry. Added to this there is also a selection of daily specials for both starters and main courses. My partner decided on the surf and turf, I chose the Lomo with honey and mustard sauce and our friends chose a rump steak with a pepper sauce and the steak and mushroom pie.
The starters arrived and were very good, the prawn cocktails were really full of large juicy prawns and the spring roll and the pate very tasty.
The surf and turf for the main course was huge and not for the faint hearted. It had with it chips, onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes and peas and the same applied to the rump steak. The Lomo was of a much more normal size and was delicious and came with saute potatoes and vegetables. The steak pie was nice and it came whith chips, peas and carrots.
Although we were all very full, as usual we could not resist looking at the dessert menu and found items such as Chocolate Fudge Cake, Fruit Crumble, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Cheesecake and Pecan Pie. We eventually decided that we would share a pecan pie €3.60 and some Vanilla Ice Cream €3.00. I must say that the pecan pie although it was o.k, was not the best I have ever tasted, the flavour was not bad but the filling was a bit soggy. Three of us ordered a coffee and I noticed on the menu that liquer coffees are available at €3.75 and that there is a very good selection of after dinner liquers. A very enjoyable evening was had by all and everyone felt that at €121.54 the whole meal was exceptionally good value for money. If you like good English food, then The Travellers Inn would be well worth a visit.
